Backed Against the Water

The Israelites had barely made it out of Egypt when they looked back and saw Pharaoh’s army thundering toward them, with the Red Sea sitting in front of them like a locked door. So they did what most of us would do and turned on Moses, asking with some real sarcasm, “Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt?” Moses didn’t hand them a battle plan, because this fight was never theirs to begin with. His answer came down to one promise: God will fight for you, so just stay calm. By morning, that same scared crowd was walking through the middle of the sea on dry ground.
Maybe your water looks like a past-due notice on the counter or a call from the doctor you’re still waiting on. Maybe it’s a situation at work closing in from both sides while you lie awake running every escape route in your head. Staying calm in the middle of that doesn’t mean pretending it’s fine. It means letting go of a fight God already said was His. Israel couldn’t see the road until they were standing at the edge of the water, and you may not see yours tonight either. But the same God who split that sea is already out ahead of you, making a way.
MOMENT OF PRAYER
Good God, You know exactly what’s closing in on me right now, and You know how many times I’ve tried to fight it on my own. Like Israel at the edge of that sea, I keep looking back at what’s chasing me instead of looking at You. Help me stay calm, not because I have it all figured out, but because You already said this fight is Yours. When I can’t see the road, remind me that You’re already making one. Give me enough peace tonight to rest and enough faith tomorrow to take the next step.
In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.
STAND FIRM TODAY
Think of the one situation you’ve fought hardest in your head this week, the one you keep replaying at night and trying to solve from every angle. Today, name it to God and tell Him plainly that you’re handing this fight over to Him. Whenever you catch yourself running through the escape routes again, stop and say the verse out loud: “The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” You’ll still show up and do your part, but you don’t have to carry the battle alone anymore.
And if you’d like someone standing in prayer with you, share your request on our Prayer Wall.
