Bread, Water, and a Nap

Elijah had just watched fire fall from heaven on Mount Carmel, the kind of day most of us would frame and hang on the wall. One angry message from Queen Jezebel later, he was running for his life into the desert, where he sat down under a lonely broom tree and told God he’d had enough. If you’ve ever gone looking for a bible verse for burnout, this is it. God’s answer wasn’t a lecture or a pep talk. It was warm bread baked on hot stones, a jar of water and a nap. When Elijah woke up, ate and lay right back down again, the angel came back and touched him a second time. In so many words he said, eat some more, because the road ahead is longer than you are.
Maybe your week looked a lot like his. Maybe you pulled off the big thing at work, or kept the whole house running on four hours of sleep, and then one email, one comment or one bill at the wrong moment knocked the wind right out of you. That crash doesn’t mean you’re weak or that your faith has failed. It means you’re human, and God already knows exactly how far you have to go. He isn’t standing over you with a clipboard. He’s setting out bread and telling you to rest, and he’ll keep coming back as many times as it takes, until you’re strong enough to get up.
MOMENT OF PRAYER
Lord, you know how tired I am, even the parts I keep hiding behind “I’m fine.” Thank you for meeting my exhaustion the way you met Elijah under that tree, with care instead of disappointment. Help me stop running on empty and calling it strength, and teach me to take the rest and nourishment you put in front of me without feeling guilty about it. When the road ahead feels longer than I am, remind me that you already see every mile of it and that you’ll give me what I need for each one.
In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.
STAND FIRM TODAY
Before this weekend gets away from you, pick one real way to refuel and put it on the calendar. Go to bed an hour early, eat a meal sitting down instead of standing over the sink, or turn your phone off for an afternoon. Treat it like God set it out for you, because he did.
Carrying something too heavy to set down alone? Share it on our Prayer Wall and let us pray it with you.
Carry This With You
