Bible, notebook, and pen prepared for a simple Bible reading routine.

How to Start Reading the Bible

James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

Starting to read the Bible can feel intimidating. Some people do not know where to begin. Others have tried before and stopped. Some worry they will not understand enough. But the goal is not to impress God with perfect Bible reading. The goal is to listen to Him with a humble heart.

James 1:22 reminds us that Scripture is not only meant to be heard. It is meant to be received, believed, and lived.

A helpful way to start is to begin with the Gospels, especially the Gospel of John or the Gospel of Mark. The reason is simple: Christianity is centered on Jesus Christ. Before trying to understand every timeline, symbol, or difficult passage, begin by looking at who Jesus is, what He taught, why He came, and what His death and resurrection mean.

Read slowly. You do not have to rush. A few verses read with attention are better than several chapters skimmed without thought. Ask simple questions as you read. What does this show me about God? What does this show me about people? Is there a command to obey, a promise to trust, a sin to turn from, or a truth to remember?

It also helps to pray before you read. Ask God to give understanding and humility. Bible reading is not merely an academic exercise. We need God’s help to receive His Word rightly.

In real life, consistency matters more than intensity. Many people make a huge plan, miss a few days, feel guilty, and quit. Start smaller. Set aside a regular time. Read a passage. Think about it. Write down one sentence. Pray about what you read. Then come back tomorrow.

James warns against hearing without doing. That means Bible reading should not stop at information. If Scripture shows you pride, confess it. If it calls you to forgive, take that seriously. If it reminds you of God’s faithfulness, carry that truth into your day. If it teaches you to trust Christ, respond with faith.

You will not understand everything at once, and that is okay. Growth takes time. The Christian life is not built on one dramatic reading moment. It is shaped by the steady work of God’s Word over time. Keep opening the Bible. Keep listening. Keep obeying what God makes clear.

Closing Reflection

Do not wait until you feel like an expert to open the Bible. Start with humility, stay consistent, and let God’s Word shape your life.

Prayer

Lord, help me read Your Word with humility and faith. Give me understanding, patience, and a heart ready to obey. Let Scripture shape my thoughts, choices, and walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Starting with a Gospel and reading a manageable amount each day feels much less overwhelming. Consistency matters more than trying to read too much at once.
