Before You Say Another Word

October 19, 2026
A thoughtful woman sits quietly at a sunlit kitchen table with a coffee mug, journal, and phone. James 1:19 reminds us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.

You know when it happens. That one conversation that changes your whole mood. Someone says something that rubs you the wrong way. A message comes through that sounds a little harsh. Before you even know what they meant, you’re already thinking about what you’re going to say back. And sometimes, the words come out before you’ve had a chance to think them through.

We’ve all been there. But James reminds us that there’s wisdom in slowing down. Being quick to listen doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything someone says. And being slow to speak doesn’t mean staying silent when something needs to be addressed. It means giving God room to guide your response instead of letting your emotions make the decision. You may never know what someone else is carrying when your paths cross. A little patience, a little understanding, and a few carefully chosen words can make a bigger difference than you realize.

MOMENT OF PRAYER

Good God, please help me listen with patience and speak with kindness. When my emotions rise, remind me to seek Your wisdom before I respond. Let my words bring understanding instead of hurt, and help me show others the same grace You’ve shown me.

In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.

STAND FIRM TODAY

Before responding to something that upsets you, give yourself a moment. Listen a little longer. Ask God for wisdom. Sometimes the strongest thing you can say begins with knowing when to be quiet.
