Don’t Call It Small

There are days when you get to the end of them and wonder what you actually accomplished.

You worked. You answered what needed answering. You handled the ordinary responsibilities in front of you. Maybe you prayed about something that still has not changed, tried again at something that still feels stuck, or encouraged someone and never knew whether your words made a difference. Nothing dramatic happened. There was no breakthrough moment, no obvious sign that God was moving, and no reason for anyone else to look at your day and call it important.

Those are the days when discouragement can quietly slip in.

We tend to respect visible progress. We like finished things, clear results, big moments, and proof that our effort is paying off. Small beginnings are harder to trust because they do not give us much to celebrate yet.

That was part of the struggle in Zechariah’s time. God’s people were rebuilding after loss, and what stood in front of them did not look impressive. Compared with what had once been there, the work could easily have felt disappointing. But God told them not to despise the day of small things.

That lesson reaches further than a rebuilding project.

Much of what God does in a life begins where almost nobody can see it. A stronger faith may begin with one honest prayer. Healing in a relationship may begin with one difficult conversation. A new direction may begin with one act of obedience that feels ordinary at the time. Even the character God is forming in you is usually shaped through choices so small that you may not recognize their importance until much later.

We often want God to show us the finished picture while He is still teaching us how to be faithful with the first few pieces.

So if today feels small, do not be too quick to dismiss it.

You may not have crossed the finish line. You may not even feel much closer than you did yesterday. But if you showed up, obeyed what you knew was right, prayed when you felt discouraged, loved somebody well, or kept going when quitting would have been easier, then something meaningful happened.

God does not need every day to look impressive in order to use it.

Sometimes the quiet work is the work that changes everything.
