Somebody Finally Said Her Name

Hagar didn’t get much say in her own life. She was an Egyptian servant in Abram’s household, handed over by Sarai to have the baby Sarai couldn’t, and when things turned ugly between the two women, Hagar ran off into the desert, pregnant and alone. Until then nobody in the story had said her name out loud, since Abram and Sarai only ever call her “my servant” and “your servant.” Then, sitting by a spring in the middle of nowhere, she hears the angel of the LORD say, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?” Before it’s over she has a promise for her son and a brand-new name for God, the God who sees me, and she’s the only person in Scripture who gives God a name herself.
Maybe you’re the one who keeps the house running and nobody notices until the milk runs out, or the coworker whose idea got credited to someone else in the meeting, or the person who sits in the parked car an extra ten minutes because it’s the only quiet you’ll get all day. You don’t have to be loud to be seen. God found Hagar by a spring in the desert when nobody else was even looking, and He knows exactly where you’re sitting today too.
MOMENT OF PRAYER
Father, You are the God who sees me, even on the days I feel like I could disappear and nobody would notice until something didn’t get done. Thank You for finding Hagar by that spring before she ever thought to look for You, and for knowing where I am right now, what I’ve been carrying, and the name nobody else bothers to use. Help me believe I’m seen even when I feel invisible, and open my eyes to someone around me who needs to be seen too.
In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.
STAND FIRM TODAY
Hagar’s whole day turned around because somebody finally said her name, so today, do that for someone. Pick the person who usually gets overlooked, like the cashier, the custodian or the quiet one in the group chat, read the name tag or remember the name, and thank them for something specific, out loud and by name.
And if you’re the one feeling unseen right now, you don’t have to carry it alone. Share it on our Prayer Wall and let us pray with you.
Carry This With You
“Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the LORD, who had spoken to her. She said, ‘You are the God who sees me.’ She also said, ‘Have I truly seen the One who sees me?’” – Genesis 16:13
