Listen Before You Answer

September 8, 2026
Two people sit beside a lake at sunset in quiet conversation, with James 1:19 overlaid: “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

Most of us are better at waiting for our turn to speak than we are at actually listening.

Someone says something we disagree with, and while they are still talking, we are already building our response. Someone hurts us, and our first instinct is to defend ourselves. Someone misunderstands us, and suddenly being understood feels more important than understanding them.

James gives us a different order.

Be quick to listen. Slow to speak. Slow to anger.

That does not mean you never speak up. It does not mean truth should stay silent. It means your first response does not have to be your fastest one.

Sometimes wisdom sounds like a few extra seconds of silence.

Jesus never needed to rush His words to prove who He was. Neither do you.

There will be conversations today where you could interrupt, correct, defend, or fire back. Before you do, listen long enough to hear more than the words. There may be fear underneath the anger. Hurt underneath the criticism. Or something you simply missed the first time.

You do not lose your voice by listening first.

You give wisdom a chance to speak through it.

MOMENT OF PRAYER

Father, slow me down when I am too eager to speak. Help me listen with patience instead of preparing my defense. Give me wisdom to know when to speak, courage to tell the truth with love, and self-control when anger tries to take over. Let my words reflect You instead of simply reflecting my emotions. In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.

STAND FIRM TODAY

In one conversation today, deliberately listen longer than you normally would. Before answering, ask yourself: Have I actually heard this person, or am I only ready to respond?
