When Your Heart Feels Heavy
“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” — Psalm 55:22
A Moment That Feels Familiar
Some mornings feel heavy before the day even begins. You wake up, and your mind is already carrying things. A conversation you are dreading. A bill you still need to pay. A family burden you cannot solve. A disappointment you never expected. Sometimes the weight is obvious, and sometimes it is quiet, but it is there all the same. You get moving, do what needs to be done, and maybe no one else can even tell. But inside, your heart feels tired. That is a real place many people know well. A heavy heart does not mean you are weak, and it does not mean you have failed God. It may simply mean you are carrying something that was never meant to be carried alone.
What God’s Word Says
Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” That verse is both honest and comforting. It does not pretend the burden is small. It does not tell you to deny it, manage it better, or smile your way through it. It tells you where to take it. David knew what it was to be under pressure. He knew fear, betrayal, and emotional strain. Yet he learned that the safest place for a burden is not in his own hands, but in the hands of God. The Lord may not always remove the load the moment we pray, but He promises to sustain His people beneath it.
Where This Meets Real Life
Most of us are tempted to carry our burdens in silence. We replay the problem, rehearse the worst case scenario, or try to hold everything together through willpower. Even after praying, we sometimes pick the burden back up as soon as we say amen. But this passage invites us into a better way. To cast your burden on the Lord is to place it before Him honestly and refuse to treat yourself as your own savior. You still show up. You still take the next faithful step. But you do it leaning on Him, not pretending you are enough for everything pressing in on you. Christian strength is not the absence of weakness. It is dependence on the Lord in the middle of weakness.
A Step to Carry Into Today
Take one burden that has been sitting heavy on your heart and name it plainly before God. Do not keep it vague. Tell Him exactly what it is. Then ask Him to help you release it into His care. You may need to do that more than once today, and that is okay. Each time the burden rises again, turn it back into prayer. Let it become a conversation with God instead of a private conversation with fear. A simple prayer like, “Lord, I give this to You again. Please sustain me today,” can become a quiet act of surrender. The situation may not change immediately, but the way you walk through it can.
Prayer for Today
Lord, You see the weight I am carrying today. You know the burdens I speak about and the ones I keep hidden. Help me not to carry them in my own strength. Teach me to cast my cares upon You and trust that You will sustain me. Give me wisdom for what I need to do, peace for what I cannot control, and strength for the next step in front of me. When my heart feels heavy, remind me that You are near, faithful, and strong enough to hold what I cannot. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This reflected exactly how a heavy heart can make even simple things feel difficult. I am grateful for the reminder that God is near even when emotions are hard to explain.
