Letting Go of What You Cannot Control
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
A Moment That Feels Familiar
Control can feel comforting, at least for a moment. We make plans, organize details, and try to think ahead because it gives us the sense that life is staying manageable. But there are many things we cannot control. Other people’s choices, the timing of God, the outcome of a situation, the future we cannot see — all of these remind us how limited we really are. That can be frustrating and unsettling. The more uncertain life feels, the more tightly we tend to grip it. Yet that tight grip rarely produces peace. More often it produces tension, fear, and exhaustion. What feels like control often becomes a burden we were never meant to bear.
What God’s Word Says
Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” That passage invites us out of self-reliance and into trust. It does not say our understanding has no value, but it does say it cannot be the foundation we lean on. God sees the whole picture. He is not surprised by the things that unsettle us. To acknowledge Him in all our ways means we invite Him into the very places where we are tempted to grasp for control. We remember that guidance belongs to Him more than it belongs to our own anxious efforts.
Where This Meets Real Life
Letting go of control is not the same thing as becoming passive or irresponsible. It means you stop trying to act like your careful effort can guarantee outcomes that only God governs. In real life, that may mean doing what you can do and then leaving the results with Him. It may mean having the hard conversation, making the wise plan, paying attention to what is yours to handle, and then refusing to keep squeezing the future in your imagination. Surrender often feels uncomfortable at first because it reminds us we are not in charge. But over time, it becomes a place of rest because it returns us to the truth: God is wiser, steadier, and more able than we are.
A Step to Carry Into Today
Name one thing today that you have been trying too hard to control. Then tell the Lord honestly that you are giving it back to Him. You may still need to take practical action, but let that action come from trust instead of panic. Each time your mind circles back around that issue, remind yourself, “This is in God’s hands, even while I do my part.” Surrender is often repeated, not one-time. But every repeated act of surrender loosens fear’s grip and strengthens trust. The Lord is fully capable of carrying what you cannot control.
Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the ways I try to control what only You can govern. Help me trust You with all my heart and stop leaning only on my own understanding. Teach me to do my part faithfully while leaving the outcome in Your hands. Replace my tension with peace and my striving with trust. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Trying to control everything is exhausting. This devotional reminded me that surrender is not giving up; it is trusting God with what was never mine to manage.
